We are delighted to welcome the sensational vocal and instrumental Baroque ensemble La Nuova Musica described as “one of the most exciting consorts in the early music field” by BBC Radio 3.
Handel’s Coronation Anthems present a feast of pomp and lyricism, while his Dixit Dominus provide a virtuosic display of vocal exuberance.
As a young man flexing his compositional muscles in Rome in 1707, Handel was hoping to ingratiate himself with the most powerful men in Town – the Cardinals. For Dixit Dominus (a Coronation Psalm) he chose a text that talks of the power of ‘God’s men’ on earth to overpower their enemies by any means necessary. It is a work of drama, violence and power.
His Coronation Anthems rely on larger forces (including trumpets and drums), broader sonorities and declamations to celebrate the Coronation of George II. There are moments of extreme beauty, fanfares and of course one of the finest introductions in all Baroque music – Zadok the Priest.
