Franz Schubert

West Road Concert Hall
Ben Johnson tenor
Louis Schwizgebel piano
With special guests Martin James Bartlett and Alena Baeva
Festival Director Ben Johnson introduces this special evening concert, celebrating the music of Franz Schubert and marking the end of the 2023 Festival.
The programme includes a selection of Franz Schubert’s most beautiful Lieder, Fantasy for four hands in F minor, Violin Sonata in A minor and the Piano Sonata in C minor.
Pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as “a genuine virtuoso, a spirited young genius with real depth” (Fono Forum) and an “insightful musician” (New York Times). He is praised repeatedly for his poise, elegance, imagination, expressive lyricism and crystalline articulation, making him one of the finest Schubert interpreters of our time.
Ben Johnson is a celebrated interpreter of Schubert Lieder, having performed the composer extensively with pianists Graham Johnson, Roger Vignoles and Maria João Pires. He and Schwizgebel have recently given an acclaimed tour of Schubert’s Winterreise and unite again for a selection of the composer’s finest songs.
The concert will also welcome musicians who have performed in this year’s festival to add to the gala celebration that is the closing concert of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival 2023.
